Ep 80 How to Produce Indie Films with Craig Conway who talks new horror film Mara and a way forward for filmmakers with Giles Alderson

Producer and actor Craig Conway sits down for a filmmaking chin wag with director Giles Alderson.

Craig talks in depth about how we can create a new ethic for creatives. How the Filmmaking and Producing system in the UK needs changing and reforming so that cast and crews share the revenue not just the execs who are making a world of inflated money.

They talk about working with ‘star names’ and do they make a difference to the box office?

Craig talks about making his psychological horror film Broken directed by Sean Robert Smith, working at NuBoyana studios on Hellboy with director Neil Marshal who he has worked with 4 times and soon to be 5! and new horror film Mara. Which took TEN years to make!

How to survive in the business you need to find people around you who have transparency and trust. Finding the right people to work with. The right source of investment and making films with a social responsibility and be bold and say no if it doesn’t feel right. There is always a way to make your film.

Craig has starred in TV and films including: Our Friends in the North, Dog Soldiers, Vera Drake, The Decent, Terry Prathcett’s Hogfather, Doomsday, Romans 12:20, The Tournament,  Devil’s Playground, Four, 7 Lives, Airbourne, Final Score, Hellboy and Mara.

He has produced the films Devil’s Playground, Four, Estranged, Giantland, Gatecrash, South of Hopestreet and Broken

Director, screenwriter, cinematographer, podcaster and great guy Mike Pecci joins Giles Alderson on the Filmmakers Podcast this week to shoot he breeze about filmmaking.

They talk Mike’s award winning short film 12KM which Mike made after cracking his head open while ice skating on a date and having a vision. We talk about making commercials, surviving in the business and a generally brilliant chat about film making in general and his Podcast In Love With the Process which is about filmmaking (and food)

With over 18 years of experience, Mike has cemented a name for himself not only as a photographer and music video director, but as an abstractly edgy filmmaker who is undeniably devoted to the art of storytelling. His characters are the faces of his work – passionate, emotional, and distorted stories are the basis for some of Mike’s most well-received films.

ZELOS from the Greek – meaning ‘zeal’, ‘ardour’, and ‘amorousness‘, but also ‘jealousy’, ‘possessiveness’ and ‘suspicion’

Bernard is the thirty-something he always planned to be. He has a successful career, a meticulously neat beachside apartment and a hairstyle with just the right amount of gel. He adores his girlfriend Sarah who’s about to move in when she returns from overseas. But Bernard’s pristine existence is turned upside down when Sarah confesses her holiday romance.

To salvage the relationship, Sarah insists they equal the playing field: Bernard should sleep with another woman.

A man who would never cheat is asked by the woman he loves to have sex with someone else to save their relationship — a compromise which may ultimately destroy them, as love becomes corroded by jealousy.

By pre-emptively forgiving him for an infidelity he hasn’t yet committed, does Sarah prove that she truly loves Bernard or is it a sign that she doesn’t actually love him at all?
